Kindergarten is a busy place.  The kindergartners have been working hard.

Things we have been working on:

Letters, letters, letters...........    Letter sounds are an important part of kindergarten.  Although we will continue focusing on one letter at a time for further study, kindergartners should be familiar with all 26 letters capital and lowercase.  Kindergartners should know most of the letter sounds as well.

Words, words, words............  We have been reading words.  The kindergartners are getting good at sounding out beginning words.  They should also be able to recognize our sight words.  The sight words that we have covered so far are listed below.

the     a     my     that     and     I     is     said     in      we    it      are    you     on     have     to     me     go     do     for     he     as     she     his     has     at     with    was     be     see     this     of     not     from     they     your     there     here     put     who     what     make     were     her     where    then    made   into    will    but   him     did     get     up     if     all     be     so     some     been     does     us     their     would     done     must     than     about     very

Numbers, numbers, numbers..............  We will cover 1-31 officially, we will learn numbers farther as they are ready.  Students should be able to read and understand these numbers, recognize patterns, count objects, understand words such as more, less, above, below, beside, fewer, greater, and same.

Counting benchmarks:    1st quarter: 25         2nd quarter: 50         3rd quarter: 75             4th quarter: 100

Kindergarten students need to be able to recognize penny, nickel, dime, and quarter as well as know how much each coin is worth.

We work on addition and subtraction during the second semester.

All of the kindergarten students are involved with guided reading for 45 minutes daily.  The students attend three sessions in their groups during this time.  One session is with me.  During their time with me we are working on reading stories at their level.

  • we read stories
  • discuss character, setting, and plot
  • punctuation marks including period, question mark, and exclamation mark
  • letter sounds, beginning sounds, ending sounds, medial sounds
  • sequence
  • main idea and supporting details
  • author's purpose: entertain, inform, or persuade
  • problems and solutions
  • naming words and action words
Students attend one session during guided reading with Mrs. Dlouhy doing activities that reinforce skills already covered.   The other session is independent work time.  Students are given instructions ahead of time and required to sit quietly and carry out the activity on their own.  These activities practice skills, allow for creativity, direction following, fine motor development, or sometimes are just for fun while practicing independence.
